Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
