Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
