A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
